What Pickup Trucks Do Canadians Actually Drive? Ontario & Quebec Registration Data
Counting pickups by make and model in Quebec's 2022 and Ontario's 2025 registration files — the Ontario part is an estimate — gives close to two million pickup trucks, and four nameplates — Ford F-Series, Ram, GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado — account for about four in five of them. Midsize trucks such as the Tacoma, Ranger and Colorado make up roughly one in six. Below are the numbers by model, and the canopy bed lengths ArcTrek lists for each one.
UPDATED
By registration count, the Ford F-Series is the most common pickup in both Ontario (2025 data) and Quebec (2022 data), followed by Ram, GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado.
- Ontario, 2025: an estimated 1,348,440 pickups, identified by model code; the four largest families are 80.7% of them.
- Quebec, 2022: 610,917 pickups; the four largest families are 76.2% of them.
- These are vehicles on the register in two provinces, in two different years — not sales, and not a Canada-wide count.
Sales charts say what sold in a given year. Registration files show every vehicle on the register at one point in time — the end of 2022 for Quebec, the 2025 file for Ontario — including older trucks, not just new ones. This guide uses the open registration data published by Quebec's SAAQ and Ontario's Ministry of Transportation, then matches the trucks that show up in it to the bed lengths on ArcTrek's fitment tables. The two provinces publish different years, so every figure below is labelled Quebec 2022 or Ontario 2025 and the two are never added into a national number.
Key Numbers
| Measure | Quebec (register at Dec. 31, 2022) | Ontario (2025 file) |
|---|---|---|
| Pickups on the register | 610,917 | 1,348,440 (model-code estimate) |
| Share held by F-Series, Ram, Sierra and Silverado together | 76.2% | 80.7% |
| Ford F-Series | 173,735 (28.4%) | 410,869 (30.5%) |
| GMC Sierra vs Chevrolet Silverado | 92,111 vs 76,963 | 191,832 vs 181,155 |
| Midsize and compact share | 18.0% | 14.3% |
All rows count registered vehicles, not sales. Shares are of the pickups identified by make and model in each province; the midsize share leaves out the catch-all “Older/other pickups” group.
The Top Pickups by Province
The order of the first four families is the same in both provinces. Below them the midsize trucks trade places: the Tacoma is ahead of the Ranger in Quebec, and the Ranger is ahead of the Tacoma in Ontario.

Families group every size under one nameplate: F-Series is the F-150 plus Super Duty, and Ram includes trucks badged Dodge Ram. Vehicles in the catch-all “Older/other pickups” group are left out of both tables; older model years of the nameplates shown are still counted in their family. Ontario's Ram count includes model codes assigned by inference; see the method notes below.
Both registers have grown. Quebec went from 546,978 pickups in 2017 to 610,917 in 2022, up 11.7%, while all cars and light trucks in the province grew 5.4%; pickups rose from 10.46% to 11.08% of that total. Ontario's identified pickups went from 1,073,144 in 2014 to 1,348,440 in 2025, up 25.7%. Some smaller nameplates grew faster from a low base: in Ontario the Chevrolet Colorado went from 10,809 to 27,524 (+154.6%), the Toyota Tacoma from 22,179 to 46,640 (+110.3%) and the Toyota Tundra from 19,895 to 39,787 (+100.0%). In Quebec the Tacoma went from 20,635 to 27,348 (+32.5%) and the Silverado from 58,299 to 76,963 (+32.0%).
What Newer Trucks Look Like
Looking only at three recent model years on each register — 2020–2022 in Quebec, 2023–2025 in Ontario — gives a rough picture of what has been added lately. These slices are not the very latest model years in either file, and they are still counts of registered trucks, not sales figures. The F-150 leads both lists.
Quebec: model years 2020–2022 on the 2022 register
| Rank | Model | Registered |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ford F-150 | 37,921 |
| 2 | Ram 1500 | 26,154 |
| 3 | Chevrolet Silverado | 22,479 |
| 4 | GMC Sierra | 20,593 |
| 5 | Toyota Tacoma | 6,260 |
| 6 | Ford Super Duty (F-250/F-350/F-450) | 4,072 |
| 7 | Ford Ranger | 3,889 |
| 8 | Chevrolet Colorado | 3,517 |
| 9 | Toyota Tundra | 3,474 |
| 10 | GMC Canyon | 2,992 |
Ontario: model years 2023–2025 on the 2025 register
| Rank | Model | Registered |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ford F-150 | 71,002 |
| 2 | GMC Sierra | 44,965 |
| 3 | Ram (all model codes) | 39,628 |
| 4 | Chevrolet Silverado | 31,284 |
| 5 | Ford Super Duty (F-250/F-350/F-450) | 27,226 |
| 6 | Ford Ranger | 15,353 |
| 7 | Toyota Tacoma | 10,926 |
| 8 | Toyota Tundra | 10,897 |
| 9 | Chevrolet Colorado | 6,092 |
| 10 | Honda Ridgeline | 3,581 |
Ontario footnote: the Ontario counts leave out 57,913 vehicles recorded under VIN-derived model codes that cannot be read as a model name. That figure covers all model years of those codes, which are concentrated in model years 2018 and later; it is not the gap in the 2023–2025 table, and how many of them fall in that range is not known. Some of them are likely pickups, so recent Ontario model years are understated — most of all for Ram, Toyota Tacoma and the GM trucks. Quebec's file does not separate Silverado and Sierra 1500 from the heavy-duty versions.
Midsize trucks have not taken over the newer model years. In Quebec, midsize and compact pickups are 19.5% of model years 2010–2012 still on the register and 16.9% of model years 2020–2022. In Ontario they are 15.1% of model years 2010–2012 and 16.1% of model years 2023–2025.
Full-Size vs Midsize: Why Bed Length Matters
A canopy is built for one bed length, so the mix of truck sizes on the road is also a mix of canopy sizes. Neither registration file records bed length or cab style; the bed lengths here come from ArcTrek's fitment tables, not from the data. On those tables the full-size half-tons (F-150, Silverado, Ram 1500, Tundra) are listed between 5.5' and 6.5', the heavy-duty trucks (F-250 / F-350, Ram 2500) between 6.4' and 8', and the midsize trucks (Tacoma, Ranger, Colorado, Frontier, Gladiator) at 5' or 5.2'. The same model can come with more than one box, so measure yours before you order. For the payload side of the choice, see the lightest canopy for a half-ton.
Where Pickups Dominate: Quebec Regions
Quebec's vehicle-by-vehicle file records the administrative region where each vehicle's owner lives. The Ontario summary table used here has no geographic field, so there is no matching regional breakdown of Ontario pickups. Across Quebec, pickups are 11.08% of cars and light trucks on the 2022 register; by region the share runs from 3.7% in Montréal to 41.3% in Nord-du-Québec.
| Quebec region | Pickups as a share of cars and light trucks, 2022 |
|---|---|
| Nord-du-Québec | 41.3% |
| Côte-Nord | 28.2% |
| Abitibi-Témiscamingue | 27.8% |
| Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine | 23.9% |
| Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean | 22.4% |
| Bas-Saint-Laurent | 18.3% |
| Outaouais | 15.3% |
| Chaudière-Appalaches | 14.6% |
| Mauricie | 13.4% |
| Centre-du-Québec | 13.4% |
| Estrie | 11.7% |
| Laurentides | 11.3% |
| Lanaudière | 11.0% |
| Capitale-Nationale | 10.1% |

Bed lengths are copied from the product pages, which list model years as “All”. Box dimensions can change between generations of the same truck, so confirm your model year with ArcTrek before ordering.
The GMC Sierra is the third most common pickup family in both provinces, and it is not on ArcTrek's fitment tables. The same goes for the GMC Canyon, Honda Ridgeline and Ford Maverick. If you drive one of these, contact ArcTrek to confirm fitment rather than ordering from a row listed for another truck. All three shells carry the same 5-year structural / 3-year hardware warranty.

Method & Sources
- Stock, not sales. Both files count vehicles on the register. A truck sold in 2015 and still plated is counted; a truck sold last month and not yet in the file is not.
- Two provinces, two years. Quebec's newest file is 2022; Ontario's is 2025. Other provinces and territories are not covered.
- How pickups were identified. Quebec's file puts cars and light trucks in one class, so pickups were picked out by make and model name. That misses some trucks: the Hyundai Santa Cruz is not counted, because the file gives it the same model name as the Santa Fe, and the Ford Maverick is counted from model year 2022 only, because older Mavericks were cars. Ontario's pickups were picked out by make and model code among active commercial-class vehicles, so the Ontario total is an estimate from that method, not a verified count of every pickup. MTO's files also count vehicles by body-type code, and the two counts do not reconcile: the model-code count is higher, possibly because some codes include chassis-cab trucks, while vehicles under unreadable codes are missed. MTO has not published a legend for its body-type codes. The Ontario total includes 48,031 vehicles under model codes assigned by inference (Ram and Jeep Gladiator) and leaves out the 57,913 vehicles under unreadable codes described above.
- Bed lengths. From ArcTrek's product-page fitment tables only. The registration data has no bed length.

Pickup trucks in Ontario and Quebec — FAQ
What is the most common pickup truck in Ontario and Quebec?
The Ford F-Series ranks 1st by registration count in both provinces. Ontario's 2025 file shows 410,869 F-Series pickups, 30.5% of the pickups this page identifies there by model code, and Quebec's 2022 file shows 173,735, or 28.4%. These are vehicles on the register, not sales in a given year.
Are there more GMC Sierras or Chevrolet Silverados on the road?
In these two provinces, more Sierras. Quebec's 2022 register lists 92,111 GMC Sierra pickups and 76,963 Chevrolet Silverado pickups; Ontario's 2025 file lists 191,832 and 181,155. That is a count of registered vehicles and says nothing about either truck's quality.
Does this data cover all of Canada?
No. It covers Ontario and Quebec, and the two files are from different years: Ontario's is 2025 and Quebec's newest is 2022. The page does not add them into a national total and does not describe pickups in the other provinces and territories.
How common are midsize pickups compared with full-size trucks?
Counting only the pickups that can be sorted by size — the catch-all Older/other pickups group is left out of the base — midsize and compact trucks are 18.0% on Quebec's 2022 register and 14.3% on Ontario's 2025 register, roughly one in six. The rest of that sorted group is full-size and heavy-duty trucks. In the recent model-year slices shown on this page, the midsize share is 16.9% in Quebec (model years 2020–2022) and 16.1% in Ontario (model years 2023–2025).
Does ArcTrek list a fitment for the GMC Sierra?
The GMC Sierra is not on the fitment tables of the Adventure Topper, Commercial Topper or Canopy Camper product pages. If you drive a Sierra, contact ArcTrek to confirm fitment before you order; do not assume a row listed for another truck applies to yours.
What bed length does ArcTrek list for the Ford F-150?
ArcTrek's fitment tables list the Ford F-150 at 5.5' / 6.5' for the Adventure Topper and the Commercial Topper, and at 5.5' for the Canopy Camper. Registration data does not record bed length, so measure your own box and confirm your model year with ArcTrek.
